How sad it is that this country is split roughly 50/50 on the presidential elections once again. To me, it's because the campaign has degenerated into familiar swamp: race, religion, patriotism, with all the usual slurs. But here's the thing, common sense says we can't be that divided as a people. If we were, then there would be chaos.
Follow up:
Now it's possible that on particular issues like religion, patriotism, race we are still divided--which says to me each person should be able to do as they choose as it's too close to call. But on the big things, making America a country that works, for all of its citizens, a nation that is globally responsible without being the bully. A country that leads by example, and carries one hell of a stick.
Here's where politics fails me, and has for decades. Let's talk about what's important: The economy. Let's find a way for every hard working American to be able to own a home. Let's find a way to give every American the chance at higher education. Let's talk about what we're going to do about energy costs: this year, five years down the line, ten years down the line. Let's talk about clean air and clean water.
Let's go outside the box and get rid of most crime at its source. We can do this in about 90 days.
Let's talk about terrorism. Let's make a concentrated effort to fight mullah with mullah. Let's get the word out about the true religion of Islam, not the twisted version of Al Qaida. And we must show the world that what is wrong with the approach of the Islamic extremist who wish to go back in time, is that you can't go back, plain and simple--the world won't allow it. The Arab culture gave us so much, calculus being just one small example. Just as Al Qaida funds mosques in the United States, let the U.S. fund mosques in Arab countries that teach the true Islam as it is found in the Koran as a whole. Religion that is allowed to pick and choose, take things out of context, and base their whole approach on these snippets is victim of the garbage in, garbage out syndrome. And for God's sake, let's not invoke His name as the reason for the war on terror.
