I've been following the Somali pirates for months now. I've been amazed at how the free world has lain down in the face of water buccaneers. Then they made their first mistake.

The Republicans have labeled the Democrats soft for decades. Kennedy was a communist they say. Johnson was, well he was the exception. Carter was doomed for failing in Iran. Clinton let Osama bin Laden get away. The Republicans have trumpeted their war-mongering as an asset. Nixon would have got us into World War III, instead he took five years to agree to the same peace process that was on the table when he took office while bombing millions in Cambodia and North Vietnam to fill the time. Reagan and Bush were smarter. They resorted to hit and run tactics against the mice that roared in Panama, Libya, Granada and Iraq (round one). Baby Bush ignored the wisdom and strategy of Bush Senior and doomed our country to years of prolonged withdrawal.

Today, we're confronted by creeping nuclearism in Iran and North Korea. The Chinese are beating the drums and flexing their economic might. Cheney is saying the closing of Guantanamo and outlawing of water boarding have doomed the country. With President Obama firmly in control of reviving our economy, the Republicans are desperately searching for an issue. The Somali pirates capture of United States Captain Richard Phillips seemed tailor made. I'm sure the Republican strategists were salivating, waiting for the traditional Democratic wimp out.

Instead, we have another hero on Obama's watch. First Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger, Captain of the US Airways flight 1549 and now Captain Richard Phillips of the Maersk Alabama. If I was a Republican I would be asking why my God was forsaking me.

I see an America that is at a crucial junction in its future. The choices and actions we make today will have long lasting impact on our country's future.
