The U.S. has been fighting the War on Drugs for almost 30 years. "Just say no!" didn't amount to much in the end. Today, drug use and the associated violence attending it are the worst they've ever been. The U.S. also spends a small fortune on the war. In many ways, it's much worse than the Vietnam War or the ongoing War in Iraq. Unlike those wars, this one is easily to solve and win.
Make drugs legal. U.S. buys drugs from the cartels and then chooses what to do with them: destroy them or sell them to the end users. Violence ends instantly AS LONG AS THE QUALITY AND PRICE AFTER TAXES IS THE SAME AS ON THE STREET.
The tax revenues would be substantial. The police would be freed up to deal with crimes that matter. Our jails would cease being over crowded. Hell, they'd be almost empty and could be used for homeless shelters until we get through this economic meltdown.
And let's not forget about the DEA who you'd think would be out of work if this ever became law. Not at all. The one thing the DEA proved is that they are excellent at doing undercover and infiltration work. Sounds like a good fit with the real war, The War on Terror (and I don't mean Iraq, or even Afghanistan).
The moral issue (drugs are the scourge of the devil) is all that's left to overcome. Tell them about safer streets, less violence and other benefits, then convince them it's not a perfect world, it's the real world where people ARE using drugs and it's been proved we can't stop their use, so why not regulate them and reap those benefits?
