I See An America - Volume 1 Issue 23 - Time To Revisit Drug DeCriminalization

Let's face it, things are going to get worse before they get better. Times like these encourage thinking outside the box....after all, conventional thinking is part of the reason we're in the fix we are. So maybe it's time to re-examine our thinking about drugs. Forget for the moment whether drugs are good or bad--we're thinking outside the box, remember. There are two reasons people use drugs: they are bored, or their life sucks and they're trying to get fucked up enough to escape it. There is only one reason people deal drugs: to make money.

Follow up:

So let's pretend for a moment that drugs were legal. Instantly, the number one problem assigned to drugs--crime--vanishes. Druggies aren't getting busted, druggies aren't tying up our justice system and druggies aren't overcrowding our prisons. Dealers are instantly put out of business. The government obtains an enormous infusion of tax revenues and profits by licensing pharmacies to dispense the now legal drugs. Sure, there are things that need to be refined...especially restrictions on the use of drugs in the work place. And we'd have to think of something to do with all of the DEA agents who no longer has a reason to exist. Maybe enroll them on the war on terror. Lord knows they know how to infiltrate the seamier sides of the underworld.

So let's see. Increased revenue, better anti-terrorism protection, a more mellow population and maybe a start on worrying about what's really important.

I see an America that is at a crucial junction in its future. The choices and actions we make today will have long lasting impact on our country's future.
